Record the device model, controller, firmware mode, driver and operating-system version. Determine whether the disks are managed by an independent RAID controller, firmware RAID or a standard SATA controller. A setting named RAID may affect more than one disk and may be required by the installed configuration.
AHCI and NVMe belong to different storage paths. Do not apply old SATA tuning instructions to a modern NVMe system merely because both use SSDs. Check the system documentation rather than assuming the interface from the drive’s physical shape.
Measure the symptom before changing modes
Decide whether the problem is throughput, latency, boot behaviour or intermittent errors. Correlate it with disk health, cable or link errors, controller logs and other workloads. Compare like-for-like operations and separate cached from sustained results.
A low transfer rate can come from the source, destination, application or network. Changing a controller mode cannot remove every bottleneck. Record the current configuration so any later intervention is based on evidence rather than a remembered default.
Treat firmware changes as disruptive
Changing between controller modes can prevent the installed operating system from booting or make an existing array inaccessible. Do not try an arbitrary BIOS toggle on a production machine. Obtain a verified recovery copy, recovery keys, console access and the vendor-supported migration procedure first.
If the hardware vendor does not support the proposed transition, use a supported rebuild or migration plan instead. Avoid copying registry edits from an old blog without confirming the operating system, driver and controller to which they apply.
Validate the complete workload
After any approved change, verify boot, data access, error logs and the original application operation. Compare measurements taken under the same conditions and confirm that protective write settings remain appropriate.
