Begin with workloads and constraints

Inventory guest operating systems, application support requirements, storage, network dependencies and recovery objectives. Identify workloads whose vendor support depends on a particular platform. Check hardware compatibility before treating an existing server as reusable.

Proxmox VE integrates KVM virtual machines and LXC containers in a Linux-based platform. Hyper-V fits a Windows virtualisation operating model. Containers and full VMs are different isolation and management units; do not treat their resource figures as directly interchangeable.

Compare the whole operating model

Evaluate patching, permissions, monitoring, backup integration and access to support. For a small team, a platform that matches existing skills may reduce operational risk, but familiarity does not excuse an unsupported configuration.

A cluster adds dependency and failure-mode questions: quorum, shared or replicated storage, networking and recovery capacity. A two-host diagram is not evidence of high availability. Design around the failures the business needs to tolerate and the resources available during degraded operation.

Obtain current licensing and support terms

Proxmox provides an open-source platform with paid subscription and support options. Include the chosen support level and operational staffing in the budget. Hyper-V is part of the Windows ecosystem; host licensing, guest rights and management products need their own current assessment.

Do not infer that a hypervisor feature makes all guest operating systems free. Request a licensing review for the actual host cores, editions, guests and migration scenario. Compare the total annual cost alongside backup and storage requirements.

Prove migration and recovery before switching

Pilot a representative guest on the target platform. Check drivers, networking, time, activation, application support and backup restore. Measure the downtime and manual steps required for migration and document a rollback decision before moving a production service.

Keep the source recoverable until the destination passes acceptance. Test host maintenance and recovery without assuming that a snapshot substitutes for a backup. Choose from observed compatibility and operating evidence, not a synthetic benchmark from unrelated hardware.
